Sturgis PAL received the 1st installment of our Wharf Prosperity Grant funds on May 22, 2017 in the amount of $ 4,000. These funds were immediately applied toward the ordering of 10 quality mountain bikes, helmets and high visibility shirts. With the purchase of these bike and equipment, we were able to kick off the Sturgis PAL Youth Mountain Bike Club in July, 2017. The youth mountain bike club was offered to kids’ ages 9 to 18 and met weekly to teach basic mountain biking skills, bicycle maintenance and organized rides lead by Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater and several other Sturgis Police Officers. Approximately 10 to 12 youth registered initially, but as the word spread about the youth mountain bike club, the number of youth enrolled in the club quick grew to nearly 35 kids. The youth mountain bike club continued to meet weekly throughout the year to go on organized rides on the areas mountain biking trails, with the average ride being between 10 to 12 miles long. During these rides, Chief VanDewater and several other Sturgis Police Officers and other adult volunteers were able to build positive, lasting relationships and mentor the kids in our group. The youth mountain bike club met well into December, but once the snow and cold weather arrived, it was decided to postpone the club until the early spring of 2018.
